STRATHSPEY RAILWAY CHARITABLE TRUST
THE "RAILS TO GRANTOWN PROJECT"

picturephpThe Strathspey Railway Company has, since its foundation in 1972, had an ambition to run its steam railway services to Grantown-on-Spey and to create a visitor destination station there. Services presently terminate at Broomhill, 3 miles from Grantown. The 3 mile extension would give passengers a 27 mile round trip allowing time to be spent at the destinations at either end of the line plus bring commercial benefits to businesses in Grantown-on-Spey.

As well as generating employment, the extension would help maintain railway heritage skills in the Highlands and provide another “sustainable” transport option in the Cairngorms National Park and enhance the Strathspey Railways role as Scotland’s premier Heritage Railway.

The Railway already provides fine views of the Cairngorms, the River Spey and diverse Highland wildlife habitats. The Grantown extension would add another wonderful scenic dimension to the trip.

In 2008 a new body, The Strathspey Railway Charitable Trust, (SRCT)was formed with the specific task of restoring this part of the former Highland Railway line to Grantown. This leaves the Strathspey Railway Company free to concentrate on running trains on the existing line from Aviemore to Broomhill and ultimately over the extended line when it is completed by the Trust.

This new Trust gained Charitable Status in May 2009. This gives it access to various ways of raising funds which have never been available to the Railway Company or its related Supporters’ Association.
