THE WEC WATKINSON TRUST
RESTORATION OF 5025

AviemoreShedviewcroppedThe restoration of 5025 will be carried out at Aviemore shed and will be the most comprehensive overhaul carried out on the engine since British Railways days. While specialist contractors will carry out certain aspects of the restoration, such as major work on the boiler, in their workshops, much of the project will involve volunteers. The Trust will welcome the support of new volunteers in this work.  5025 retains many of its original features. The fact that it was purchased from BR and not from a scrap yard means most of the fittings from its railway service are still on the engine. During the restoration emphasis will be placed on retaining as many of the original components as possible.

Once the locomotive has been restored to working order it will operate under an agreement the Trust has concluded with the Strathspey Railway Company. The Company will be responsible for the operational maintenance of 5025 and will also establish a sinking fund into which it will pay an agreed sum for its ongoing restoration.
